FAQs

Q: Why is Greater Somerset County YMCA making modifications to the Somerville YMCA’s Adult Locker Rooms?
A: Making modifications to Somerville YMCA’s Adult Locker Rooms will ensure that we can best serve our robust membership and also address evolving community needs through regular maintenance and enhancement of our facilities.

Q: What does the Locker Room maintenance project include?
A:  The Somerville YMCA Locker Room maintenance project will include:

  • Brand New Men’s Changing Rooms
  • Brand New Women’s Vanity
  • Full Removal of Steam Rooms

Q: What is the timeline for construction and completion of the Somerville YMCA Locker Room maintenance project?
A: Work will commence on or around March 16th and is expected to conclude on April 14th. The wet portion of the adult men’s and women’s locker rooms has a temporary full closure. Please note that all dates are subject to change based on weather emergencies, materials delays, and any other factors outside of our control.

Q: Will construction impact how I utilize the facility?
A: To minimize the impact on Somerville YMCA members and program participants when the wet portion of the locker rooms is unavailable, we have planned a temporary schedule for adults to use the youth locker rooms.  Please check the welcome center for schedules. Y staff will communicate directly with members. Members should also look for signage in and around affected areas.

Q: Will parking be affected by the construction activity?
A: A portion of the far end of the parking lot by the pool will be reserved for construction vehicles and materials as needed.

Q: Will the project have an impact on child care programs?
A: Through our planning for the construction, we have worked to minimize any impact on our child care programs. If and when there will be any impacts on how these programs utilize our facility, participating families will be informed in advance by Y staff using the Brightwheel app. Complimentary Kids Corner babysitting for members while you work out will be unaffected by the renovation project.

Q: Why remove the steam room?
A: As a nonprofit committed to strengthening community we must be good stewards of our resources – financial and otherwise. The repetitive repairs required for these steam rooms and chronic downtime leave the Y with little choice except to remove this amenity and replace it with one that both adds additional space and does not require continuous remedial repairs.

Q: Will this project affect Somerville YMCA membership or program fees?
A: No. The cost of renovating Somerville YMCA’s locker rooms is a regular planned maintenance project to support a quality member experience for years to come. However, the fees for membership and programs are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Q: Where can I receive updates?
A: We will keep members and program participants informed about progress and any temporary changes that may occur through our Weekly Member Newsletter delivered to your inbox every Thursday and text messaging. For the most up to date information on availability please sign up for text alerts here.  Members should also look for signage in and around affected areas.
