POWER UP YOUR Y WORKOUT WITH EGYM

At the YMCA, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of our community. Our popular EGYM circuit provides members with a guided training experience through real-time feedback rep-by-rep on your form, speed, and progress toward your health goals. EGYM works for EVERYONE, from the beginner to the more advanced athlete. Gain confidence that you’re doing the right workouts the right way with EGYM at the Y!

What is EGYM?

EGYM is state-of-the-art smart fitness equipment that is completely motorized and retains individual member settings for a new kind of training experience:

  • Automatically syncs with the EGYM fitness app to track your progress and visualize results
  • Adjusts to your personalized settings (i.e. resistance & weight) when you tap your wristband
  • Adapts workouts based on your progress so you never stagnate or over-work

FREE for members. Complimentary RFID wristband. Orientation required.

The Equipment

Our EGYM training system in the Wellness Center at Somerset Hills YMCA includes the following to engage all major muscle groups for a complete, full-body workout every time:

  • Abdominal Crunch
  • Back Extension
  • Bicep Curl
  • Chest Press
  • Leg Curl
  • Leg Extension
  • Leg Press
  • Seated Row
  • Shoulder Press
  • Tricep Press

EGYM machines feature touchscreens with an interface like a video game that shows you how many reps to do, at what speed and with what range of motion. The EGYM machines are arranged in a circuit and a timer tells you when to change machines to ensure a full workout in under 45 minutes. These machines are incredibly easy to use because they’re personalized to you.

To use these machines, each member completes an orientation where they receive their free personalized identification band*, which allows the machines to recognize you, adjust for height, weight and strength, and tracks your progress.

*There is a $10 replacement fee for lost EGYM wristbands. The machines cannot be used without the band.

Why EGYM Works

EGYM was developed using state-of-the-art exercise science. Different fitness goals require different workouts—a weightlifter works out differently than someone who has never strength trained. In order to make sure that you start at a comfortable level, never overtrain, and always keep improving, EGYM adapts the following equipment settings based on your goal, progress and body type:
  • Weight
If you want to gain muscle, EGYM will set a higher training weight whereas a lower weight is sufficient for weight loss
  • Number of reps
Many repetitions with less weight define the muscle, whereas few repetitions with more weight enlarge it
  • Training duration
EGYM alternates long, less intensive sessions with short, high intensity ones to ensure that you’ll continue to grow
  • Pace of Movement
A fast, explosive movement has a different effect than a long slow movement

NEW! EGYM+ PREMIUM TRAINING PROGRAMS

Your goals. Our support—with EGYM! Give your health and well-being goals a boost with our lineup of eight new EGYM+ training programs. Whether you are looking to achieve a healthier weight, build muscle, maintain strength before a procedure, or are brand new to training—we have the right EGYM+ program for you!

EGYM and EGYM+ training programs are FREE for members. Complimentary RFID wristband. Consultation appointment required.

Which EGYM+ program will you choose? No matter your age, ability, or previous fitness experience, at the Y, we have something for everyone to live their healthiest life:

ATHLETIC

The Athletic training program is designed to improve power and performance by increasing the makeup of fast-twitch (Type 2) muscle fibers. Neuromuscular improvement is the goal of this EGYM+ program. Beginning with a base building phase meant to increase muscular development, the program shifts to explosive training during the targeting and retargeting phases (II and IV) with a slight deviation to strength development in phase III providing variation in the stimulus.

Ideal for:

  • Athletes looking to improve power and reaction time
  • Older adults looking to prevent muscle loss, improve reaction time and reduce fall risk
  • Members who are ready to move on to the next level of training after building a solid strength foundation
  • Weekend warriors seeking to reduce injury risk, improve coordination, power, and reaction time
  • Non-Athletes who want to improve power, stamina, and coordination for activities of daily living (ADLs)

Key benefits:

  • Improve reaction time
  • Increase glycolytic energy production mechanisms for enhanced power production and stamina
  • Improved muscular synchronization and firing rate to generate more power and force

BODY TONING

The Body Toning program combines strength endurance and hypertrophy training for optimal body definition. This EGYM+ training program is designed to tone and firm your figure, burn fat deposits, and define muscles. The goal is to permanently reduce body fat and strengthen muscles without significantly increasing muscle size.

Ideal for:

  • Members looking for sustained weight loss and to elevate their basal metabolic rate (BMR)
  • Athletes and weekend warriors looking to maintain strength and mass for sport
  • Members who want to enhance muscle definition and ‘firm up’ for pictures (figure competitors, spokespeople, wedding photos)
  • Graduates of the Muscle Building or Weight Loss programs, needing to continue on with their goal but with some variety
  • Graduates of the General Fitness program or those who have a recent history of strength training looking for the next challenge to continue improving their fitness

Key benefits:

  • Reduce body fat and increase muscle definition simultaneously
  • Increase muscle fiber activation from variability of training methods
  • Maintain muscle mass

GENERAL FITNESS

The General Fitness training program is designed to create a foundational baseline for those new to strength training and to provide a steady progression over time to increase strength and power. With a variety of training methods, members are exposed to different types of training in which different stimuli and outcomes will be evident. The variety of training in this EGYM+ program requires elevated cardiovascular demands leading to improved cardiorespiratory fitness as well as strengthening the connective tissues and joints for activities of daily living (ADLs).

Ideal for:

  • Beginners new to strength training or members who are unsure of their fitness goals
  • Non-Athletes wanting to improve power, stamina, and coordination for activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Athletes looking to reduce volume and intensity between hard training cycles while maintaining mass and strength
  • Members looking to continue building from a previous (repaired) injury
  • Older adults who need to begin a lower intensity, power and strength training program to mitigate muscle loss
  • Weekend warriors needing foundational, consistent training to keep their muscles and joints resilient

Key benefits:

  • Solid, well rounded program good for most beginners
  • Exposes members to new and advanced training methods to further improve their strength and fitness
  • Increased physical capacity and athletic performance
  • Can be used as an off-cycle period between higher intensity training cycles

IMMUNITY BOOST

The Immunity Boost training program has a unique intensity and progression designed to activate the immune boosting function of your muscles. Moderate intensity, progressive increases in training through programs such as this can foster immuno-supportive conditions to help our body combat contagions.

Ideal for:

  • Those who may have limited energy or experience fatigue
  • Members who are recovering from injury and cleared to begin low level strength training
  • Members looking to prehab prior to surgery with low intensity movements to keep the muscles active and preserve strength
  • Members who are just beginning an exercise routine for the first time and needing a gentle but progressive program.
  • Members with musculoskeletal conditions that inhibit efficient movement mechanics

Key benefits:

  • Gentle, progressive increase in intensity
  • Low level muscular endurance training
  • Improve joint mobility
  • Strength preservation prior to treatment

METABOLIC FIT

The Metabolic Fit program is specifically designed to support improved glucose control. The long workouts combined with high reps and full body stimulation in this EGYM+ program may promote improvement in HbA1c.

Ideal for:

  • Members who are new to strength training
  • Overweight, obese individuals
  • Any member who wants to maintain or improve their overall health

Key benefits:

  • Improve muscular endurance
  • Contribute to lower body fat

MUSCLE BUILDING

The Muscle Building training program is designed to maximize muscle growth using high intensity loads and slow movement speeds. Large cross-sectional activation is forced due to the combination of high load and elongated time under tension (slow tempo). This EGYM+ training program is specifically designed to increase the anabolic effect from strength training.

Ideal for:

  • Members wanting to build muscle or increase muscle size
  • Individuals looking to preserve muscle mass as a result of aging or other causes
  • Those wanting to improve strength or power
  • Members who have completed a basic 10-12 week strength training program looking to move on the next level
  • Athletes needing strength and/or additional mass for their sport
  • Women who want to improve muscle definition

Key benefits:

  • Increase muscular size and healthy ‘look’ of muscles
  • Increase overall strength and power
  • Increase bone density

REHAB FIT

The Rehab Fit training program is a lower intensity program designed to address existing problems, recover after an injury, or prehab. Gentle on the joints by starting with a low to moderate weight to minimize the risk of injury from excessive strain. This EGYM+ program progresses from development of a functional base to achieving a full range of motion to rehabilitation of the musculature for return to daily activities.

Ideal for:

  • Members recovering from injury and cleared to begin low level strength training
  • Those looking to prehab prior to surgery with low intensity movements to keep the muscles active and preserve strength
  • Any member who is just beginning an exercise routine for the first time and needing a gentle but progressive program.
  • Members with musculoskeletal conditions that inhibit efficient movement mechanics
  • Those who may have limited energy or experience fatigue

Key benefits:

  • Gentle, progressive increase in intensity
  • Low level muscular endurance training
  • Strength preservation prior to treatment

WEIGHT LOSS

The Weight Loss training program is designed to maximize calorie consumption and improve fat metabolism over the long term. Long set durations, high rep and moderate to high loads, require constant high heart rate to force calorie burning and muscular endurance adaptation. The combination of intense muscle building phases in this EGYM+ program provide for an increased basal metabolic rate therefore increasing the non-activity calorie burn necessary for sustained weight loss.

Ideal for:

  • Beginners new to strength training or those unsure of their fitness goals
  • Non-Athletes wanting to improve power, stamina, and coordination for activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Athletes looking to reduce volume and intensity between hard training cycles while maintaining mass and strength
  • Members looking to continue building from a previous (repaired) injury
  • Older adults needing to begin a lower intensity, power and strength training program to mitigate muscle loss
  • Weekend warriors needing foundational, consistent training to keep their muscles and joints resilient

Key benefits:

  • Solid, well rounded program good for most beginners
  • Exposes user to new and advanced training methods to further improve their strength and fitness
  • Increased physical capacity and athletic performance
