Somerville and Bridgewater YMCAs Honor the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Day of Service

SOMERVILLE, NJ – On Monday, Jan. 15th, the Bridgewater and Somerville YMCAs, branches of Greater Somerset County YMCA, observed Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual birthday through a Day of Service.

This service project provided an opportunity to promote volunteerism and celebrate community engagement, echoing the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”

In honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Y assembled book bags filled with essential items for Visions and Pathways – an organization based in Bridgewater that manages group homes statewide, assisting abused, neglected, and homeless youth.

Community members and families, local companies, staff, volunteers, and branch board members all dedicated their time and effort to get the job done.

Wayne Holmes, Bridgewater YMCA and Somerville YMCA Branch Executive Director, said, “We worked with a dedicated group of over 50 volunteers and packed more than 60 backpacks filled with personal care items for the benefit of Visions and Pathways. These care packages were put together to assist teens and young adults during their transition to new living spaces, providing them with a fresh and positive start.”
