Plainfield YMCA Honors the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Day of Service
Plainfield, NJ – January 16, 2024 – On Monday, January 15th, in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual birthday, Plainfield YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, held a Day of Service to promote volunteerism and celebrate community giving. Embracing King’s philosophy that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”, the Y honored his life and legacy with meaningful actions.
Together, the Y, community volunteers, local companies, high school students, and branch board members dedicated an hour to cleaning up public spaces ensuring a cleaner, healthier community for all and another hour to giving out coats to those in need, providing comfort and warmth during this winter season. This year’s service project exemplified the spirit of service and community engagement inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.
Leonardo Gonzalez, Senior Program Director at Plainfield YMCA, expressed his appreciation, saying, “It was great to have Plainfield YMCA be a part of two events for MLK Day of Service and inspiring to see so many dedicated volunteers come together to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through a Day of Service.”
Plainfield YMCA also participated in the 48th Annual MLK Memorial Breakfast Celebration, hosted by Plainfield Public Schools. This memorable event paid tribute to the remarkable legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration was filled with inspiration, unity, and a strong sense of community. Scholarships were awarded to young scholars during the event, recognizing their outstanding work and dedication.
