Hillsborough Student’s Vision for “Free Little Pantry” Continues to Make a Difference

Somerville YMCA’s Free Little Pantry Turns Four

Somerville, New Jersey, January 11, 2024 — Originally launched on January 1st, 2020 before the pandemic, Somerville YMCA’s Free Little Pantry, spearheaded by 16-year-old Hillsborough High School student Shailee Shah, has successfully provided nourishment to thousands in the community. Colleen Sweeney, a community member, notes, “We started a trend.”

The pantry, donated to address community food insecurity, became an indispensable resource when the pandemic struck, serving not only Somerville but also countless families in Somerset County. It stood out as the sole pantry open 24/7.

While various grants, including those from The Pride Committee for Somerville Education Association and the Community Development Block Grant from Somerset County, played a crucial role in stocking the pantry during the pandemic, the primary support has stemmed from neighbors dedicated to helping neighbors.

“This community is unparalleled in its closeness. Just ask and put it out there. After four years, the pantry not only thrives but has expanded,” remarks Kate Russo, District Vice President at Bridgewater, Somerville, Somerset Hills YMCAs.

Since its inception, the community has designated Little Free Pantry Community Champions responsible for collecting and delivering donations, some of which come from an Amazon wish lists. Somerville YMCA has cultivated numerous community partnerships, including the Mass Feeding Coalition and local food banks. The Free Little Pantry extends beyond food, with shelves stocked with personal care and school supply items. Anyone can sign up the be a Community Champion, gathering and collecting food from their friends and neighbors and stocking the pantry.
