Greater Somerset County YMCA Hosts 150th Anniversary Gala

Basking Ridge, New Jersey, November 27, 2023 – On Friday, November 3, Greater Somerset County YMCA held a Sesquicentennial Gala at The Marigold in Somerset to commemorate its remarkable 150-year history of strengthening community, as well as to honor 21 longtime Y advocates who were recognized for their leadership, dedication, influence, generosity and positive impact on the Y.

More than 250 guests attended the fundraising event, including past and current members of the Y’s Board of Directors and Branch Boards, distinguished honorees, supportive donors and sponsors, and many other Y champions. The festive event was not only a time to celebrate the Y’s history but, also, its future.

“This is a time to reflect and to look forward. The needs of our communities are ever evolving, and the Y plays an indispensable role in building resilient, compassionate, and thriving neighborhoods,” commented Greater Somerset County YMCA Board of Directors Chair, Greg Romano. “The Y is the heart and soul of the community. It strengthens the social fabric by offering a sense of belonging, support, and hope that is immeasurable in value.”

As a nonprofit, community benefit organization, Greater Somerset County YMCA’s purpose has remained consistent throughout its history – to remove barriers and provide the resources, opportunities, and support everyone needs to thrive; particularly, for neighbors who struggle financially, physically and emotionally. Since its founding in Somerville in 1873, Greater Somerset County YMCA has grown to serve all of Somerset County as well as parts of surrounding counties. Community support fuels the Y’s mission.

“The strength of our mission is attributable to our devoted, generous donors, partners and volunteers,” said Kelly Castro, Greater Somerset County YMCA Chief Philanthropy Officer. “We are so grateful to Simon Quick Advisors, Life Fitness, Peapack Gladstone Bank, and Pfizer for their lead sponsorships of the Gala, as well as for our wonderful volunteers who planned the event.”

The Sesquicentennial Gala volunteer planning committee included Robyn Burke, Peter Cirignano, Chris Edwards, Erika Evleth, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Marisabel Fernandez, Kate Fleschler, Lisa LaVecchia, Karen Ostarticki, and Linda Osterman.

During the ‘Raise a Paddle’ portion of the evening, the Y’s mission was brought to life by showcasing stories of transformational impact. Longtime Y member, Erika Evleth, and former NY Jets player and Y member, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, served as volunteer auctioneers and inspired guests with their own heartfelt stories about the meaningful influence of the Y in their lives.

“Greater Somerset County YMCA continues to be the bedrock of positive change; it’s a 150-year legacy. Our Sesquicentennial Gala is more than a celebration of our YMCA, it is a celebration of the vibrant communities we serve, the lives we transform, and the devoted volunteers and benefactors who help fulfill our mission every day,” says David M. Carcieri, President and Chief Executive Officer.
