Fighting Food Insecurity, Together

April 12, 2020

In crisis, the Y is here for all. Did you know that many children receiving free and reduced meals experience hunger when schools close? Combined with skyrocketing unemployment and nationwide economic uncertainty, and it’s not difficult to see why our most vulnerable populations need more help than ever.

HOW TO HELP

At Greater Somerset County YMCA, we’ve been working closely with our dedicated Togetherhood® committees and volunteers, local families, neighboring school districts, and our community partners to address access to nutritious food for our neighbors in need. Through this incredible, collaborative network of people with a passion to help, the Y is able to continue to strengthen community and accomplish the following:

  • The Little Food Pantry located outside Hillsborough YMCA & Somerville YMCA continues to provide important staples to local families and is restocked each day by staff, members and Togetherhood volunteers
  • The Y is working in partnership with Feeding Hands Pantry to bolster their efforts to provide and deliver weekly boxes of food for those in need and even help unload trucks of donations twice monthly to their location
  • Greater Somerset County YMCA is hosting designated collection bins at every branch across the county in partnership with and support of Somerset County Food Bank and the Somerset County Food Bank School Back Pack Program
  • Somerville YMCA’s Togetherhood Committee continues to provide and deliver 200 brown bag lunches every 3rd Tuesday to clients in the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP)
  • Hillsborough YMCA is actively collecting soup donations in to meet the needs of the Franklin Food Bank
  • Somerset Hills YMCA’s Togetherhood Committee coordinated the preparation and delivery of ~200 weekly meals to veterans living in Valley Brook Village, located on the VA NJ Healthcare Campus of Lyons—provided courtesy of local prepared foods establishment M&M Perrotti's
  • Somerville YMCA coordinated with Somerville Public Schools to provide more than 2,000 'grab n go' breakfast and lunch bags for students during spring break week from Monday, April 6th through Monday, April 13th, including Easter Sunday—all from local restaurants and food stores and made possible through the generosity of local donors
