Q: As the Y reopens according to NJ’s Restart and Recovery Plan stages, will things be back to ‘normal’ again right away? If not, when?

A: For everyone’s safety, the Y will have new guidelines and processes in place as we reopen programming and facilities in stages, in accordance with New Jersey’s Restart and Recovery Plan. We’ve been carefully planning to reopen our facilities and reactivate key programs in the safest manner possible so you can access the services and support you miss and need the most. The way we’ll interact with each other will be different, but at the Y, you’ll always be able to connect with people, improve your health and wellness, nurture your children’s potential and help strengthen our community. The safety and well-being of everyone in our community – especially our most vulnerable neighbors – is our top priority. While we can’t predict how long the COVID-19 crisis will last, or whether it will be necessary to close facilities and programs again in the future, we are committed to doing whatever is necessary to ensure your safety.

Q: What has the Y done to prepare to reopen?

A: We’re following guidelines from health experts and local officials to ensure that our facilities meet the highest standards for hygiene and safety, and we have modified our policies and programs to facilitate safe physical/social distancing practices. Our skilled facilities teams at each of our branches, in conjunction with our outside cleaning companies, engaged in a thorough sanitizing deep clean of our facilities from top to bottom using hospital-grade disinfectants. Select other minor maintenance projects at our Ys have been coordinated or executed by our facilities directors at each branch. Our pools are still being maintained on a daily basis. The pool decks and locker rooms have been power washed. Staff are being educated and trained in new safety processes and procedures. Signage and markers are in place throughout our facilities to help support appropriate social distancing measures. You can be assured that your safety – and the safety of all our members, program participants, staff and volunteers – is our number one priority. As reopening dates are announced, we will be ready for you!

Q: How can I stay informed?

A: We will continue to keep our members updated regarding the status of our facilities and programming via our website, email, and My Y Alerts text messaging.

Q: How can I help?

A: As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community, Greater Somerset County YMCA empowers everyone, no matter who they are or where they’re from, by ensuring access to resources, relationships and opportunities for all to learn, grow and thrive. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Y is needed now more than ever. Here’s how you can support the Y’s efforts in caring for community:

  • Curb Hunger – During these challenging times, local families and seniors are facing food insecurity. Donate food to local food banks. Collection bins are located at Hillsborough, Somerset Hills and Somerville YMCAs. Additionally, you can help stock the Little Food Pantries located at Hillsborough and Somerville YMCAs.
  • Volunteer – At the Y, you can always find a way to make a positive impact in our community: you can volunteer on our board, coach or mentor kids, teach a class, welcome members and visitors, help collect and distribute food to support the most vulnerable in our communities, and more. Where there’s a Y, there’s a way. Learn more.
  • Make a Gift – In crisis, the Y is here for all. As our families are recalled to work, we recognize the profound economic impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had and continues to make on those who depend on the Y for quality child care. The Y offers financial assistance to qualifying members. Your gift today helps provide summer camp, early education, and more to support neighbors in need. Learn more and give today.
