Franklin Township and Hillsborough YMCAs Campers Take on Kids Triathlon
New Jersey, August 13, 2026 – This summer, children from Camp SOAR at Franklin Township YMCA and Camp STAR at Hillsborough YMCA, branches of Greater Somerset County YMCA, had the opportunity to experience the sport of triathlon through a partnership with USA Triathlon.
Supported by USA Triathlon’s Kids Tri initiative, the 2026 YMCA Kids Triathlon took place on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at River Crossing YMCA in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Camp SOAR received a donation of bicycles and helmets to support 38 campers participating in the YMCA’s Kids Triathlon. The program introduces youth to the fundamentals of swimming, cycling and running while encouraging them to challenge themselves, try something new and experience the excitement of competition.
Throughout the summer, campers learned much more than how to ride a bike. They developed foundational skills in swimming, cycling and running, while also learning about the transitions between each event that make up a triathlon.
Race day was a family-filled experience, beginning with pre-race entertainment for youth triathletes before they took to the course. Families, friends and community members gathered to cheer on the young athletes as they pushed themselves and crossed the finish line.
“It was an incredible experience to see our first-time triathletes with their smiling faces, pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones and completing a Kids Tri,” said Wendy LaFortune, Senior Youth Program Director at Franklin Township YMCA. “I had the privilege of seeing the bikes come in for every child and watching the kids try something new. It was amazing to see their excitement and determination.”
