Somerville YMCA Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for New Pre-K Classrooms, Expanding Access to Early Childhood Education

Somerville, NJ – March 25, 2026  On Friday, March 20, Somerville YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of six new pre-K classrooms, expanding future access to high-quality early childhood education for families in the Somerville community.

The event brought together elected officials, school district leaders, community partners, board members, and YMCA staff to mark a milestone made possible through strong community collaboration.

“These classrooms reflect the YMCA’s ongoing commitment to supporting children and families in our community,” said David M. Carcieri, President & CEO of Greater Somerset County YMCA. “These new spaces position us to expand access to high-quality early childhood education through partnerships with local leaders and in response to evolving community needs.”

The new classrooms were made possible through federal Community Project Funding secured by Congressman Tom Kean, Jr., supporting local efforts to expand access to Universal Pre-K. This investment reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that more children have access to early learning experiences that build confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for lifelong success.

“I am pleased to see Somerville YMCA reach this important milestone with the completion of these new classrooms,” said Congressman Kean. “In 2024, I secured nearly $3.8 million in federal funding to make this renovation possible. Quality early childhood education leads to better outcomes for our children, and these new classrooms will help ensure that affordable, accessible care is within reach for families across Somerset County.”

While the project also included enhancements to shared member spaces within the facility, the focus of this investment is clear: creating dedicated environments where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

“Today represents what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose,” said Neeraj Chander, Somerville YMCA Board Member, and member of the Property Development Committee. “These classrooms are more than new spaces. They are an investment in the future of our community.”

Following the ceremony, guests toured the new classrooms and connected with project partners who helped bring the vision to life.
